God is light (1John 1:5-10) 251007
God is light, in Him there is no darkness (v5). Simple but yet profound truth. What Apostle John meant by light and darkness were paralleled to truth (v6) and deceit (v8). And the truth is that we are all sinners and had sinned, and only by the Blood of Jesus, the Son of God, can we be cleansed and forgiven when we confess our sins to our faithful God (v8-9).
Sometimes, when we sin, we do not know; but most of the time, when we sin, we know. But whether we know or we do not know, the truth remains: we sin and we are sinners. Sin can be described as darkness hovering over our life. This darkness blinds us from understanding the truth and binds us from enjoying the fullness of joy God has intended for us to have.
God is light. He is like a fire in our heart when we received Him into our life. His presence in our life dispersed all darkness and reveal the truth and free us to enjoy the fullness of joy of the Lord. The joy of Lord is our strength.
As a Christian, where is the light? Where is God in our life? Apostle John told us that we have to walk in the light and have fellowship with one another (v7). We do not just received the light and leave it there, it will extinguish. We need to keep adding fuel to keep the light going, and confession of our sins is the best fuel. I am not suggesting that we should sin more so that we have more to confess and we can have more fuel. On contrary, we are to walk in the light, which is to sin less, though we cannot be sinless.
Therefore, the bottom line: We are sinners, we have sinned, we need to confess to God for forgiveness so that we can live in the light to know the truth and our joy maybe made complete (v4).
Do not live in darkness. Maybe, today when you read this and know that God is speaking to you about some areas of sins (can be sinful acts or simply disobedience to His Word). Maybe God is revealing to you about some areas of darkness. Maybe you are not happy and God wants you to enjoy the fullness of the joy of the Lord. I think you know what you need. Confess your sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (v9). What are you waiting for? You can call someone whom you can trust to confess so that he or she can pray for you.
Do not live in darkness anymore. Remember: God is light.
