Do you love Me? Follow Me! (John 21:15-25) 270907
This is one of the most preached passage, especially when the pastor needs to recruit some volunteers to serve in some ministries. The one question which Jesus asked Peter three times: "Do you love Me?", generated a very emotional response from Peter (v15-17). And many times, when we are asked the same question, emotions might be generated. For Peter, it was a sense of grief because of he understood of his unworthiness to love Jesus and yet he was asked to do so and even more, to take care of other sheep, so that they might do the same. For us, it will be more likely a sense of guilt because we might think that we have not done enough to love Jesus. But the truth is that we cannot love Him, unless He causes and allows us to love Him.
I was unworthy, but God is worthy of all glory and praise. And Jesus did not just stop there, He hinted, or rather reminded Peter that for him to love Him means to deny himself, take up his cross and follow Him (Lk 9:23). Jesus prophesied the kind of death Peter was going to have (v19), but to follow Jesus was not a choice, or a suggestion, but a command.
Do you love Jesus? Do you know that you are not worthy to love? But God, by His grace, gives us the privilege to love Him. Do you know that to love Him doesn’t need to do anything? All we need is to follow Him.
Do you love Jesus?
