Are you blind? (John 9:35-41) 230307

Those who drive will know the importance of checking blind spots. I ride a motorbike, and I really appreciate if drivers check their blind spots, especially when they are turning or changing lanes.

The blind man who was able to see, worship Jesus (v38). He knew in his heart that God was a reality to him, not an idea. His worship was a response to the true and living God, not just because of the miracle only. He saw Jesus beyond the healing of his blindness, He saw Jesus as God.

What do we see when God does a miracle in our life? Many people only see the miracle, but forget about God in the miracle. When we write our testimony, are we only writing about the miracle or are we writing about God?

Jesus came into this world, so that those who did not see may see and those who can see may become blind (v39). Isn’t this an irony? What was Jesus really trying to tell the people? Did He really mean that the blind will see and those who can see will be blinded? Jesus was implying spiritual sight and blindness here. He wanted us to see beyond the reality, to see beyond the here and now. If we are blind spiritually, Jesus can help us to see Him in reality, but if we can only see the here and now, we are likely blind to the reality of Jesus.

Does this sound profound? Let me try to put it in modern context. I was reading a book about overcoming the dark side of leadership. It talks about a person’s leadership can be greatly affect by his personal past experiences which form his dark side. As I was reading and reflecting, I realized that my dark side was trying to live out other people expectation. Of course I don’t live for everyone, it only some people who have great influence over my life. I need to overcome my dark side, I pray that God to help me to see my weakness and my dark side as I read this book and God really did. I am trusting God to help me to overcome my dark side, and this is my response to Him, allowing Him to transform me, so that I can be of use to Him.

On the other hand, I have a friend who majored in sociology in university. He knows a lot about human behavior and he is well versed with social behavior theories. In Bible College, he was not very open to some of the lecturers view on certain subject which concerning social behaviors. He simply rejects all these lectures view and sees no value in their teaching. I will consider this friend who can see, but is blind to God’s ability to use other in teaching us something.

Are you looking and seeing something that you are so familiar and good at, and is not able to see God at work? Or are you willing to admit your blindness, and let God helps you to see beyond what you can see here and now?
