Bread of Life (John 6:22-51) 010307

Recently I am on diet. I am really overweight and I do have other health reasons that motivates me to do so. But the problem is I still love to eat! I have been dreaming of feasting and having all kinds of nice food, but when I wake up, I have to face reality.

Jesus declared that He is the Bread of Life (v48). When the Jews heard His declaration, they will be able to recall how God had provided for their forefather in the wilderness for forty years when they left Egypt (v31, 49). It was not so much of the bread that Jesus was interested to give to them (v26,27) but it was about God’s faithfulnes in providing for His people. He reminded the people that physical food will still lead to physical death (v49) but if they received and part take Him as their Spiritual food, they will have eternal life (V50,51).

Many time in life, we pay more attention to the physical and the temporal, but Jesus is challenging us to pay more attention to the importance of the things which have eternal values. Do we busy decorating and renovating our house, but neglect to build a home? Have spent all our energy in preparing our wedding and neglect the marriage? Do we invest all our time to our career but forgot to invest some time with our love ones? Have we busy studying for exams and write papers, but forget to learn? Have we been trying to hard to teach our students with knowledge, but ignore the power of prayer which can transform their life?

It is important to remember to part take and receive this Bread of Life, because He is the sustanance of our inner life which can not only give us strength, but grace to heal our wounds and weakness. Without this Bread of Life, we are going through life without energy and purpose even.

I am writing this at 12 midnight, because I will have to wake up early tomorrow to prepare my Greek Quiz. It is a busy week, and I feel a bit tired. I think of giving up, because I have pay too much attention on the task at hand and forgotten the things I am doing have eternal impact to myself, and the people around me. Therefore, I press on. But I still need to sleep, trusting God will sustain me tomorrow as I part take Him and receive Him as the Bread of my life. Have you taken your Bread of Life today?
